In the past week, we have been very busy. We organized a spreadsheet that paired people with their partners in Africa as well as getting enough volunteers to send an individual letter to each person. Some people are paired with two partners, but I still think that it is really great that we got quite a few people to write. We plan on sending letters off to Ashley tomorrow. With the end of the school year coming up very quickly, we aren't really sure what the future of this project entails, but it will be really amazing to get responses from our partners over the summer. We don't know how many letters this program will get back and forth, but I really think that either way with many letters or just one sent, it will be really cool to get to hear from people so far away from us. Surprisingly, we have been having the most problems getting teachers involved. The end of the year is a very busy time, so many of them are struggling to find the time to write a letter. It is looking like we might have to double pair teachers as well. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it would've been cool to individually pair each person. Like I said before, hopefully, we will get letters sent very soon (target is tomorrow), and after that, we will just wait to see what happens in response!
This blog also marks the end of my time in ABM. It's an extremely bittersweet ending because I really enjoyed the class (and became more aware of how much I like working with people and helping people); however, I am excited about summer and the exciting future that I have. I think that Advanced Business Management helped me to realize how impactful even just one or two people can be on their community. It helped me to understand that work like this can be so rewarding and so amazing. However, I also learned that it can be hard work, but there is nothing like seeing hard work pay off. I'm very grateful and appreciative of taking this class and my time in this class because it really was an amazing way to end my time at NPHS; I got to serve the community, follow projects that I was passionate about, and positively impact people's lives.

We are still working to get volunteers to write our letters and get them started. We are also waiting on a little bit more information on the people who we are going to write to - that way we can pair people that we think would work together. Also, to give a little bit more insight into what to write to their partners. In regards to raising awareness/money for malaria, we don't really have enough time to attempt to buy bracelets and sell them at games and stuff. Instead we are going to try to figure out other ways to get people to donate to the link that Ashley sent us. We are very excited, though, to get this project started and get letters to Ashley.
This week, we got in touch with Ashley Malloy who is a nurse in Africa from New Palestine. She is going to help us get a project going. Our plan is to get a group of seniors from our school to send and receive letters from a group of seniors in Africa. These letters are hopefully going to be encouraging and honestly just something to help each other get through the stresses and obstacles that senior year holds for kids (like the college test in Africa that they take, and the college exams for students in the US). Since we are just in the beginning, we don't know anything about the details of this. We are looking forward, though, to what this project will hold in the future.
The second part of this project is going to be about spreading awareness here in New Pal about the impact that malaria has in other countries as well as trying to get some funds donated to Ashley's cause. We hope to get people to donate by offering them some sort of incentive - like offering bracelets to people who donate to the website (since we can't directly donate funds). World Malaria Day is actually on April 25th, so hopefully, we can use that to our advantage in some way. |
