We actually ended up sending letters to Navajo for some of the kids there. Ivey and I were the only ones who got paired with a kid (just because of parent permission and time issues). However, we have been sending letters to the two girls that we are paired with, and also, we got two more girls! We have sent one letter so far and received one back - now we have sent our second round of letters and are waiting for the girls there to respond. It has been really cool being in contact with people from different places from us, and I am excited to see how long we are in contact and how much I get to learn about them.

We have learned a lot in trying to start a new project after the dress drive. Ivey and I have such similar interests in things that we want to do, so once again, we are working together on something. Originally, we really wanted to work with homeless youth (but really kids our age who are struggling with these issues) or youth in poverty. So, we called around to multiple homeless shelters around Indianapolis, specifically Wheeler Missions and Outreach. Both of them were very kind in trying to help us, but they both though that a project with such personal connection would be too hard to do and not worth our time.
After we got turned downed locally, though, we had some ideas in working with Ivey's brother - who works on an Indian reservation in Arizona. He works with this type of stuff everyday, and he is an easy connection to get the type of people that we want to work with. After getting in contact with him, we thought that we may be able to begin a pen pal program with the younger kids there (around 7th and 8th grade) as well as collecting supplies from people here. Their school system (Gonado) is actually on Spring Break this week, which has been something that we are trying to work around, so it's kind of been a waiting game. However, here, we want to figure out a way to raise supplies like drawing supplies and clothing to donate to the schools on the reservation. We were going to do this through a talent show for the whole school body, but that got shut down too. Now, we are rebrainstorming some ways to earn donations as well as waiting for more information on the future of the pen pal program and what we can do for their schools. |
